Do you dream of steep green mountains, lush flower gardens, laurel forests and a mild climate all year round? Madeira, the Portuguese “flower island”, is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Atlantic. But what is the best time to visit Madeira for the perfect experience? The island enjoys a surprisingly stable subtropical climate, though it can vary depending on the region and altitude. In this guide, we help you choose the ideal moment based on your wishes: hiking, whale watching, sailing or nature discovery.

The Climate in Madeira 🌞

Madeira enjoys a mild subtropical climate that has earned it the nickname “island of eternal spring”. Unlike the Azores, which have a changeable oceanic climate, Madeira offers far more stable and sunny conditions. Temperatures range all year between 19 °C in winter and 26 °C in summer.

The island is shaped by a powerful relief that creates pronounced microclimates. The south (Funchal, Câmara de Lobos) is drier, sunnier and warmer, ideal for the beach and boat trips. The north (Santana, São Vicente) is greener and wetter, with lush vegetation and impressive cliffs. The high mountains around Pico Ruivo (1,862 m) can be much cooler, sometimes even snowy in winter.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the sea stays mild all year, between 18 °C in winter and 23 °C in late summer. Unlike most European destinations, Madeira can therefore be enjoyed almost year-round, which explains its popularity even in winter.

Why Discover Madeira by Boat? ⛵

Madeira is an exceptional boating destination in the Atlantic. The island’s steep coastlines, plunging straight into the deep blue sea, offer spectacular views you can only experience from the water. The sheltered waters in the south are also ideal for relaxed boat trips.

A trip out to sea also allows for dolphin and whale watching: over 20 species of cetaceans move through Madeira’s waters, making the island one of the best spots in Europe for marine observation. The volcanic coasts and hidden coves offer exceptional swimming opportunities.

Whether for a day or several days, the boat remains the best way to fully enjoy the island. Renting a boat lets you:

  • Watch dolphins and whales year-round off the south coast
  • Reach the uninhabited Ilhas Desertas, a protected nature reserve
  • Discover the neighbouring island of Porto Santo and its 9 km of golden sand
  • Swim in the natural lava pools of Porto Moniz

Sailboat, catamaran or motorboat: navigation suits beginners and experienced skippers alike, especially along the sheltered south coast. The main marina is in Funchal, with further berths in Calheta and Quinta do Lorde.

❤️ Our favourite: a catamaran trip from Funchal to watch dolphins and whales, followed by a swim stop in a secluded cove along the south coast.

April to June: The Ideal Spring 🌸

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Madeira. Temperatures are mild (19 to 23 °C), the vegetation blooms in full splendour and the island lives up to its nickname. What’s more, tourist numbers are still moderate, creating pleasant visiting conditions.

It is also the season of the famous Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) in Funchal, one of the most spectacular events of the year, which turns the city into a giant floral carpet. Funchal is also home to magnificent tropical gardens such as the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, in full bloom in spring. The trails along the levadas, the traditional irrigation channels, are particularly green and pleasant at this time.

This season is ideal for:

  • 🥾 Hiking along the levadas in full green splendour
  • 🌸 The Flower Festival and the tropical gardens of Funchal
  • 🐬 Watching dolphins on a calm sea
  • 💸 Gentler prices than in high season

👉 Ideal for: hiking, nature lovers, flower festivals.

July to September: The Best Time to Visit Madeira ⭐

If you had to choose one ideal season, it would be the months of July to September without hesitation. The weather is dry and sunny, temperatures are summery but never overwhelming (22 to 26 °C), and the sea reaches its warmest values (22 to 23 °C). It is the perfect time for boat trips and swimming.

It is also the only period when swimming in the natural pools and on the beaches of Porto Santo is truly pleasant. Whale-watching conditions are also optimal, with a calm sea and maximum visibility.

This season is perfect for:

  • 🐋 Watching whales and dolphins in the best conditions
  • ⛵ Boat trips and sailing along the south coast
  • 🏖️ Swimming on the golden beach of Porto Santo
  • 🤿 Diving with maximum visibility
  • 🌅 Spectacular sunsets at Cabo Girão

⚓ Important: July and August are the busiest months. Book your boat and accommodation at least 3 months in advance, especially in Funchal.

👉 Ideal for: summer holidays, swimming, whale watching, sailing.

October to November: The Mild Autumn 🍂

Autumn in Madeira is an often overlooked but excellent period. The sea is still warm (up to 22 °C), temperatures stay mild (20 to 24 °C) and tourists become scarcer. Prices also drop significantly, especially outside school holidays.

It is also an ideal time for hiking, as the summer heat eases and the levadas are in perfect condition. Whale watching remains excellent well into November.

This season is ideal for:

  • 🥾 Hiking in pleasant temperatures
  • 🐋 The last good conditions for whale watching
  • 🤿 Diving in still-warm water
  • 💸 Significantly lower prices

👉 Ideal for: hiking, diving, budget travellers.

December to March: The Mild Winter ❄️

Winter in Madeira is exceptionally mild compared to mainland Europe, with temperatures between 19 and 21 °C. It is one of the few European destinations where you can enjoy the sun in winter, which makes the island especially popular with Northern European travellers.

This season has a highlight around New Year’s Eve: Funchal is famous for its fireworks display, one of the largest in the world, once listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Winter is also ideal for exploring the laurel forests of the Laurissilva (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and enjoying the cultural sights.

This season is interesting for:

  • ☀️ A winter sun break far from the cold
  • 🎆 Funchal’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks
  • 🌳 The laurel forests of the Laurissilva (UNESCO)
  • 🍷 Tasting the famous Madeira wine in the cellars

👉 Ideal for: winter sun, New Year, culture, wine lovers.
