The climate in the Canary Islands

As the islands are located quite southern, the subtropical climate remains nice and pleasant all year round, with temperatures between 18°C and 28°C, so it is neither too hot nor too cold. There is little rainfall, a warm ocean, and reliable winds. But, depending on what you are looking for, beach days, hiking, or sailing, some seasons are better than others.

Why discover the Canary Islands by boat ?

The Canary Islands are the ideal place for an outing at sea ! The boat allows you to discover the different islands of the archipelago in complete freedom, to reach otherwise inaccessible places. You are able to see the beautiful coastlines shaped by volcanoes, as well as dolphins and other species. It is one of Europe’s top places to observe marine wildlife !

November to March :

To escape the cold weather and find clear skies and warm but not too hot temperatures (between 17°C and 22°C), you can go to the Canary Islands during these months. It is a perfect destination if you want to spend your winter holidays there ! Make sure to book in advance: the popularity of this place at that time and prices tend to be higher. The water is a bit colder but it is the perfect moment if you are a surf enthusiast. You can find a lot of nice spots to do so on Lanzarote island such as Famara, El Codito or El Barco. Take advantage of this more chilly period to hike in the beautiful landscapes of the Canary. In Gran Canaria you can hike Roque Nublo, one of the largest natural rock formations in the world and a former place of worship for the Aboriginal inhabitants. You might also like Teide National Park in Teneriffa, a UNESCO World Heritage National Park of historical importance, the highest point in all of Spain.

April / May, September / October :

These months are often considered the perfect time to discover the Canary Islands. The temperatures and the weather are always very pleasant and tourist traffic is also less important, except for Semana Santa, usually happening in April ! You can escape the crowds without the super hot climate of the summer months. The calm seas, especially around Tenerife & La Gomera, make it the perfect conditions for boat days where you can island-hop, watch dolphins and observe sunsets directly on the water.

June / July / August :

The summer months are a bit hotter, but the temperatures rarely go above 29°C, which keeps it very pleasant. It is of course perfect for sailing, tanning on a boat or go snorkeling. Charca de Taliare, on Gran Canaria’s east coast, is known as one of the best spots on the islands to observe rays, parrotfish and salemas. You can also encounter in the volcanic rocks, crabs, moray eels, and different types of invertebrates. On the 4th of August, you can even take part in the festival La Fiesta de la Rama, where thousands of participants participate in events with music and dance. Everyone parades through the city streets by waving tall branches, in a tradition symbolizing unity and community celebration. A very nice way of enjoying your holidays by participating in this local festival !

Even if you can go to the beautiful Canary Islands all year round, for us, the best time to go there is in the months of April / May and September / October.
