The BVIs, a Slice of Britain in the Caribbean

Are you an adventure lover, always on the lookout for an excursion to exotic places? If so, there is no adventure most appealing for an avid traveller than a yacht charter in the BVIs. This archipelago in the West Indies, just a few miles from Puerto Rico, never stops wowing you with its unique beauty. About fifty islands and islets make up this British Overseas Territory. A yacht charter in the BVIs will inevitably take you to a cruise along the archipelago’s four main islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. They offer a combination that is rare to find these days for the seasoned traveller: authenticity, natural beauty, ample leisure and sports activities, and breathtaking landscapes. The archipelago has fewer than 30,000 inhabitants, meaning that you will easily find remote coves to relax and enjoy the Caribbean’s blazing sun.

These are some of the most beautiful places to visit on the BVIs:

• Marine Cay: A peaceful lagoon, perfect for diving. Covered with flowers, the island of Marine Cay is particularly popular with families. This is where you will find the archipleago’s most famous landmark, a typical red British phonebooth in the UK on a pier next to a restaurant, reminding you that this is a small slice of Britain smack in the middle of the Caribbean. Yes, there is even a chippy (fish and chips shop) there!
• Anegada: Unique in more than one ways, Anegada is the only coral island of the BVI and almost entirely flat. Here you may encounter iguanas, exotic birds and rare plants. Try the local lobster, allegedly the best in the region. As for nautical adventures, the seabed is full of  sunken galleons to explore. A trip underwater will take you back to the era of valiant seamen and fearsome pirates roaming the Caribbean. Beware, they looked nothing like Johnny Depp.

• Peter Island. Serenity is the order of the day on this large, private island, perfect for one day trip if you charter a yacht in the BVIs. Don’t be scared by the stories about pirates using the island as a shelter. There are also protected coves to explore, as well as sandy beaches perfect for a honeymoon trip, not to mention the best spa in the archipelago. What else do you need for a perfect day?
• Norman Island inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write his famous novel Treasure Island. Currently, the most valuable treasure you will find on the island are the caves of Treasure Point Caves, a premium spot for scuba diving. The scenery is sublime, with crystal clear waters, fine sand and secure anchorage for your boat.

The climate of the British Virgin Islands is typically tropical, which means the wet season lasts from May to November. But look on the bright side (literally) of it – winter is the best time of the year for a yacht charter in the BVIs, when the weather is dry and warm and temperatures range between 20 and 28 degrees. If your idea of a perfect Christmas involves basking in the sun, a yacht charter in the BVIs is a must.
