The marvellous Catalan capital attracts tourists from all over the world. A yacht charter in Barcelona is great to enjoy the best of this cosmopolitan city and its coastline.

Costa Brava is a must

Barceloneta

Many sailing lovers choose a catamaran to cruise along the Catalonian coastline, from Barcelona all the way to Cadaqués. The typical starting point for such a trip is ultramodern Barceloneta, a trendy area along the beach. Before you set sail, take a swim at one of the neighbourhood beaches. Bogatell and Levant are also close by. These two beautiful beaches tend to be less packed in summer.

Most sailing lovers opting for a yacht charter in Barcelona head north to Costa Brava. Within a few days you can visit Montgat, Ocata, Tossa del Mar, Blanes, Begur Calella de Palafrugell and Badalona. All these small Catalan towns have good marinas and sandy beaches. Tossa del Mar in particular in an up-and-coming yachting hotspot, sheltered by a natural bay. It boasts gracious medieval walls and a sublime background of rugged rocks.

Cap de Creus

Another unmissable spot is Cap de Creus, a peninsula and national park in the easternmost tip of continental Spain. The Tramuntana wind has shaped this vast, barren expanse of rugged rocks that has allegedly inspired some of Dali’s paintings. The Catalonian coastline is interspersed with rocky cliffs, islets and small natural bays. There are several coves where you can stop, and beaches of extraordinary natural beauty. Stop at Aigua Blava or Aiguafreda, mainly visited by locals. You will come across the occasional castle ruin. Many centuries ago, Catalans ruled much of the Mediterranean, from Athens to Sicily and even parts of modern France.

A City of Many Wonders

Barcelona is a city for culture and entertainment. The Sagrada Familia is the city’s most famous landmark. It was designed by the local architect Antoni Gaudi. Also take time to visit Casa Mila, otherwise known as ‘La Pedrera’, and the marvels of Park Güell. For a splendid panoramic view of the city, visit the Montjuïc hill. The Olympic Stadium used for the 1992 Olympic Games is in the same area.

If you love urban excursions, don’t miss a visit to Barri Gótic. This historic area in downtown Barcelona is very popular among tourists and famous for its massive cathedral. As for foodie experiences, apart from tapas and sangria, don’t misss the epitome of Catalan culinary creativity: ‘pa amb tomàquet’. This dish consists of slices of bread spread with generous doses of tomato, garlic and local olive oil.

Summer is party time, and even more so if you book a yacht charter in Barcelona. In mid-August, the Gràcia neighbourhood hosts a mini carnival festival. The Festa Major de Gràcia celebrates summer in all its glory. Streets and houses are decorated with all sorts of exuberant colours and shapes. The apogee of the feast is a parade with castellers (human towers) and correfoc (fire runs). Human towers are the locals’ favourite pastime. You might even have an opportunity to join them. That may literally be the peak of your Catalonian adventure!
