✨ Key Takeaways

  • Mykonos: the queen of parties, lively beaches and legendary beach clubs
  • Santorini: the most romantic island, volcanic caldera and iconic sunsets
  • Distance: 2.5 hours by ferry between the two islands, perfect for combining both
  • Best time: May to October, with a peak in June and September
  • By boat: the best way to explore both islands at your own pace

The Cyclades are calling, but two iconic islands are competing for your holiday: Mykonos or Santorini? Both share the typical Cycladic architecture, turquoise waters and near-permanent sunshine. Yet they offer two radically different experiences. One vibrates to the rhythm of beach clubs, the other makes you sigh in front of the caldera. In this guide, we’ll help you choose the island that fits your style, or how to sail between the two.

Mykonos or Santorini: the Comparison at a Glance

Before getting into the details, here’s an overview of each island’s strengths, criterion by criterion.

Climate and Best Time to Visit 🌞

Both islands share the typical Mediterranean climate of the Cyclades, with hot dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures hover around 28 to 32 °C (82 to 90 °F), and the sea reaches 25 °C (77 °F) in August.

The best time to visit Mykonos or Santorini runs from May to October. June and September offer the ideal balance: warm sea, clear skies and manageable crowds. In July and August, both islands get crowded, especially Santorini and its famous village of Oia. The Meltemi, the typical northern Cycladic wind, blows strongly from July to September and can make sailing tricky for beginner skippers.

😎 Verdict: Weather-wise, it’s a perfect draw. The sun shines generously on both islands.

Landscapes and Atmosphere 🌅

Mykonos captures the pure Cycladic spirit: the maze-like alleys of Chora, white windmills facing the sea, Little Venice and its waterfront cafés. The island breathes laid-back luxury, between anchored yachts and bohemian-chic terraces.

Santorini plays in a different league. The volcanic caldera, formed 3,600 years ago by the eruption said to have inspired the legend of Atlantis, offers panoramas unique in the world. The cliff-top villages of Oia, Fira and Imerovigli cling to the rocks, and the sunset in Oia remains one of the most photographed views on the planet.

👉 Our pick: Santorini undeniably takes the crown for scenery. Its volcanic landscape is jaw-dropping. (That said, Mykonos wins the point on atmosphere 💃)

Beaches and Swimming 🏖️

Mykonos offers a real variety of beaches, accessible and well-equipped. Paradise and Super Paradise are the temples of beach clubs and partying. Psarou attracts celebrities, while Platis Gialos and Ornos are perfect for families. The island boasts over 25 sandy beaches, mostly facing south.

Santorini takes a very different approach. The beaches are mostly black or red sand, a legacy of volcanic activity. Red Beach offers a spectacular setting between red cliffs and turquoise water. Perissa and Kamari unfold as long stretches of black sand. However, access is sometimes limited and the sand can be scorching hot in summer.

🥁 And the winner is: Mykonos wins decisively on the beach front. Its stunning sandy beaches make all the difference.

Nightlife and Party Vibes 🎉

Mykonos is the undisputed party capital of the Mediterranean. Scorpios, Nammos, SantAnna: the beach clubs deliver a level of service and atmosphere on par with Ibiza. DJ sets stretch until sunrise, and Chora vibrates all night long in its narrow streets. It’s the go-to destination for friend trips and event holidays.

Santorini opts for a much quieter vibe. A handful of cocktail bars and gourmet restaurants liven up Fira and Oia, but nightlife stays discreet. The island favours romantic dinners facing the caldera, local wine at sunset and more intimate evenings.

🍾 Verdict: Mykonos wins nightlife by K.O. Santorini logically steps aside in favour of calm and romance.

Sailing and Anchorages ⛵

Mykonos is an ideal sailing base. Its modern marina, Tourlos, welcomes all types of boats. The island is also a perfect starting point to explore Delos, Rinia or neighbouring islands like Paros, Naxos and Tinos. Wild anchorages are plenty around the island.

Santorini is trickier for sailors. The caldera reaches 400 metres deep, making anchoring impossible in most of the bay. Boats must head to the ports of Athinios or Vlychada, often packed. Sailing conditions can also get rough with the Meltemi.

👉 Verdict: For skippers, Mykonos is the clear winner. Santorini’s deep waters make anchoring far too difficult.

Food and Culture 🍷

Mykonos stands out for its cosmopolitan food scene. Michelin-starred restaurants, fusion cuisine, traditional tavernas: the offering is vast. Try the kopanisti (spicy local cheese), the louza (cured meat) and the amygdalota (almond cookies).

Santorini bets on its volcanic terroir. The island produces one of Greece’s best white wines, the Assyrtiko, with unique minerality. Their local cherry tomatoes and the fava (yellow split pea purée) are an absolute must. The archaeological site of Akrotiri, sometimes called the “Pompeii of the Aegean”, offers a journey 3,600 years back in time.

👉 Verdict: Santorini clearly takes the lead on culture and food. Its ancient history and vineyards are simply unique.

Budget and Accessibility 💰

Mykonos is one of Greece’s most expensive destinations, especially in high season. Beach clubs and restaurants can quickly inflate the bill. The island is, however, very well connected: many direct flights from Athens and frequent ferries.

Santorini also shows high rates, particularly for hotels with caldera views. Expect several hundred euros per night in July and August. Access is by direct flight from Athens or ferry from Piraeus (5 to 8 hours).

💵 Verdict: A draw, both islands rank among the most expensive destinations in Greece.

Which Island for Whom? 🏆

Choose Mykonos if you love:

  • 🎉 Partying and nightlife

💡 And why not both? The two islands are connected in 2.5 hours by fast ferry. A boat charter also lets you combine Mykonos, Santorini and several other Cyclades in just one week. The winning combo for indecisive travellers.
