As we prepare for the year to come, we’ve been thinking of all the things we’d like to do, the adventures we’d like to go on, and the places we’d like to explore. As ever, the world’s seas are calling, offering an incredible array of locations for any traveller, whatever he is seeking. Here is a short guide to the top holiday destinations in 2025. We looked at the best places to rent a boat for a day or longer on the water.
In the first part of this article, we’ve put together a list of the popular destinations for 2025. In the second part of the blog, you’ll find some more unique boating destinations, waiting to be explored by travellers looking to venture off the beaten path.
Popular destinations for 2025
Sardinia, Italy
Starting off with a classic, Sardinia is a destination that never goes out of style. A paradisiacal island off the coast of Italy, Sardinia has something for everyone.
From Olbia, sail northwards along the Emerald Coast, a 20 km-long stretch of coastline known for its magnificent beaches and luxurious resorts. You’ll be spoilt for choice of beaches between Liscia Ruja, Capriccioli, or Spiaggia del Principe.
To extend your trip, head further up towards Porto Cervo, or Capo Ferro and its lighthouse. From there, it’s an easy crossing to the La Maddalena archipelago. Known for its pristine beaches and diverse wildlife, the archipelago is composed of a number of uninhabited islands. If you’re a fan of snorkelling or diving, this protected natural park is the perfect place for it. And don’t miss visiting Spiaggia Rosa, the pink beach on Budelli Island!
Sardinia’s coastline is a dream to discover by boat, especially along the northeastern coastline.
Split, Croatia
Split, the second-largest city in Croatia after its capital, Zagreb, is a fantastic place to visit for any history enthusiast. Notable landmarks include the Palace of Diocletian and the Saint Domnius cathedral. Split is also the perfect starting spot to explore the islands off the Dalmatian coast by boat.
From Split, sail over to Brac, the largest of the islands. Or head to Bol, to visit the charming town of Supetar. Stop at Zlatni Rat, a famous white pebble beach, and the Dragon Cave, a 15th Century chapel with carved walls. You can hike up to Vidova Gora, the highest point in the Adriatic, for all round stunning views.
You can also boat over to Trogir to visit the Old Town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mallorca, Spain
Boating along the coast is the best way to discover Mallorca. If you set sail from Palma, head to Port d’Andratx. Apart from its many small art galleries, Andratx is also the gateway to the Sa Dragonera natural reserve just behind. If you’re looking for a beach day, head south to Cala Pi, a beautiful beach enclosed by tall cliffs.
If you wish to visit the northwestern tip of Mallorca, head to Alcúdia. From there, water sports enthusiasts can hop to Puerto Pollensa. For snorkelling, sail around the Cap de Formentor. The lighthouse there, standing 210 metres above sea level, is the highest standing lighthouse in the Balearic. For a more quiet and authentic experience, away from the bustle of Palma, vist Can Picafort and Colonia de Sant Pere.
Marseille, France
Marseille, along the south coast of France, has everything to offer. After a busy day in the city, nothing compares to a relaxing afternoon in the Calanques National Park. Admire limestone cliffs pluning into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean from your boat.
Closer to Marseille, and easily accessible from the Old Port, is the Château d’If. This island fortress was made legendary by its central place in Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. From there, you can boat around the Frioul archipelago. For a longer trip, sail along the coast towards the Camargue region, west of Marseille, or towards the French Riviera, to the East.
Phuket, Thailand
The island of Phuket in Thailand is an increasingly popular destination. It’s no surprise given its stunning beauty, and the many other islands in proximity. From Phuket, you can sail over to the iconic Phi Phi Islands, rich in hidden lagoons, wonderful beaches and towering cliffs. Alternatively, a trip to Phang Nga Bay reveals the famous James Bond Island, surrounded by dramatic karst formations. Or you can explore the tranquil waters around the Similan Islands. They are known for some of the best diving in the world. Whether you‘re kayaking through caves, relaxing on a beach, or simply enjoying the views, a boat trip from Phuket is the perfect way to experience Thailand’s natural beauty.
Albufeira, Portugal
Albufeira, in the heart of Portugal’s Algarve region, is known for its old town, a set of steep, narrow streets lined with fishermen’s cottages. Set sail from Albufeira to explore Portugal’s southern coastline. Head to Lagos, stopping at the caves of Galé and Benagil along the way.
If you’re after a relaxing day at the beach, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Praia da Rocha, Praia do Vau, Praia dos Tres Castelos or Praia Joao de Arens are all equally beautiful and unique beaches. On your way back, admire Carvoeiro lighthouse, or stop at Algar Seco, a boardwalk along the scenic rocky coastline lined with caves. Albufeira’s coastline offers breathtaking beaches, and space for adventure, water sports and snorkelling away from the crowds.
Unique destinations for 2025
Fethiye, Turkey
Fethiye, also known as the city of the Sun, is a year-round paradise, perfect for a relaxing holiday. Cruising down the coast, you’ll discover the famous Blue Lagoon of Ölüdeniz. The nearby Butterfly Valley, accessible from the water, also offers a serene escapade with its waterfalls and lush greenery.
If you’re dreaming of an adventure, Fethiye is a great starting spot to visit the islands of Delikli, Yassica, Tersane, and Domuz. There are a dozen islands you can explore, dropping anchor wherever you feel at home.
For history enthusiasts, a boat trip can also take you to the ancient ruins of Telmessos, just across from Fethiye. With its rock-cut tombs perched above the sea, it is an impressive landmark.
Papeete, French Polynesia
Papeete, the vibrant capital of French Polynesia, is located in Tahiti. It’s a gateway to the surrounding islands of the Society archipelago. Human settlements are nestled along the coastline, including Teahupo’o, known for its large and consistent surf. Mount Orohena stands tall in the island’s centre. Renting a boat here lets you dive into the crystal-clear waters and discover a paradise of lagoons, coral reefs, and secluded beaches as you sail around the island. Not far off, you’ll also find the magical island of Mo’orea. A collection of jagged mountains, the island’s landscape is best seen from the water. French Polynesia, rather out of the way, is a wonderful destination for a sailing adventure. For a longer trip, there are many other islands of the archipelago to explore, all easily accessible.
Cancún, Mexico
The city of Cancún in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico is a great starting spot to discover the region. Isla Mujeres, a short ride away, is known for its vibrant waters. Part of the Garrafon Natural Reef Park, it’s perfect for snorkelling. You can also visit Punta Nizuc to snorkel around its fascinating underwater statues or enjoy a fishing trip in the deep Caribbean waters. Cozumel, an island a bit further out, is another popular destination for divers. Or sail down the coast to Tulum to discover the town’s well-preserved Mayan ruins.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The best way to see Rio de Janeiro and its magnificent landmarks is from the water. Renting a boat here will allow you to sail past the famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, avoiding the crowds. From the water, you’ll appreciate the beauty of the Christ the Redeemer statue, and the outline of Sugarloaf Mountain. Then cruise around Guanabara Bay, where you can visit the charming coastal village of Niterói. Sail up towards Cabo Frio and Buzios, or south towards Ilha Grande, one of the most popular destinations in the Costa Verde region.
Whatever your interests are, 2025 is sure to be rich in surprises and discoveries. Boating is just one of the ways to explore from a unique point of view, and at your own rhythm.
